Dear Families,

I hope you had a nice week of vacation last week! Congratulations to Lauren’s family and their new addition, baby Rachel! She was born on Saturday, February 20th and we are excited for them. Also, Wednesday was Sean’s last day with us. We said our goodbyes and he gave everyone a high five, handshake, or hug, as he left. We will miss him and his family!

Here are some highlights for the week:
• Star of the Week: Connor
(On our website under “Curriculum” and “Star of the Week.”)

• Letter of the Week: Q
(You can see our computer center drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.)

• Story of the Week: Giraffes Can’t Dance

• Language Arts: In our journals on Monday, we talked about the things that we love. Students chose one sentence to write in their journal, starting with the prompt, I love ______. We are still working on remembering capitals and periods! Students then illustrated their journals.

• Math: This week’s math was an introduction to the numbers 11-20. We learned how to use a ten-frame to help us count on faster. Students should be able to immediately identify a ten-frame instead of counting to ten, and then count on from 10. We also reviewed how to make a bar graph and practiced interviewing classmates about their favorite sea animals.

• Computer Lab: Since it was Sean’s last week with us, we used our Computer Lab time to create a booklet for Sean to take home with him. Each child was asked to write one sentence for Sean as well as their name. This was the first time for many of them to learn about the space bar, the return button, and the period key. Then they illustrated their letter any way they wanted to using Kidpix. Afterwards, we bound the book together for Sean!

• Science: Our focus for the next few weeks in science is to talk about weather, specifically rain. This week we introduced the poem, “Plip! Plop! Raindrop!” to students, and we also talked about different clouds.

• Social Studies: Since last week was President’s Day, we learned about some of our famous presidents this week. We read stories and made portraits of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Barack Obama. We also learned several facts about each president, including Washington and the Cherry Tree, and Lincoln and his log cabin.

• Art: On Tuesday, Mrs. Abada started the first half of a project that will be completed in two-sessions. We used wallpaper to cut out a background of trees, hills, houses, flowers, etc. Students were able to be as creative as they wanted to. Next time, we will be making a clay person to glue on our backgrounds.

Have a great weekend everyone! I can’t believe it’s already March and springtime is fast approaching!

Dear Families,

Here are some highlights for the week:
• Star of the Week: Aditi
(On our website under “Curriculum” and “Star of the Week.”)

• Letter of the Week: K
(You can see our computer center drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.)

• Story of the Week: Five Little Sharks

• Language Arts: This week we talked about poetry and how poems look or sound different. Some poems rhyme, some poems don’t. Some poems are written in the shape of something, and this is called a concrete poem. We wrote a concrete poem in the shape of a heart using words that remind us of Valentine’s Day. Afterwards, we used tear art to decorate our poems. We practiced using patience to complete this activity with our best effort!

• Math: We are starting a new unit to continue practicing reading, writing, and counting the numbers from 11-20. Continue working on showing addition and subtraction facts using pictures, manipulatives, and in words! Some students are still getting confused how to draw and demonstrate subtraction sentences!

• Computer Lab: We illustrated our February poem of the month called, “Dear Valentine,” using Kidpix. Students stamped a tree made of hearts. You can see these pictures under “Classwork” in our website.

• Science: On Monday, Happy Hollow came to our school and did a 45 minute presentation for our class. This was our in-school field trip. They taught us about four animal groups: birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects. For each animal group, a volunteer in our class dressed up as that animal and we learned facts about that animal group. Then, they showed us real animals including a crow, a rabbit, a turtle, and a walking stick. We had a great time learning about the animal groups!

• Social Studies: This week we continued to read stories about Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Years. We made a Photo bear during Friday centers today and we also passed out our Valentine’s to our classmates! It is always so fun to share cards and gifts with each other. Also during centers, we continued making our Red Envelopes from last week. This was a difficult project to complete because of the weaving through felt, but students’ tried their best! They took home as much as they could complete.

• Buddies: On Tuesday, we saw our fourth grade buddies. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we were challenged to create all sorts of animal pictures using only heart shapes. Students learned to cut out hearts by folding paper in half, and big buddies helped the little buddies think of ways to add details to their animals. Students brought these heart pictures home on Tuesday.

• Music: On Thursday, we saw Ms. Disney for music. She started by teaching us a song using the story, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” We were able to use instruments to sing this song. Afterwards, we learned a fun Valentine partner dance. We danced using our heels and toes, and switched partners throughout the song.

• Code Red Drill: On Thursday afternoon, Eaton School had a Code Red Drill. We have this drill once a year to practice what to do during certain emergencies. Code Red refers to situations where we have to lockdown the doors of our classroom and barricade our doors. This would only happen if there was a stranger on campus or anything where it is unsafe to leave the classroom. Students have to practice hiding quietly in the corner of the room, and the local police department even comes to test our doors. Only the afternoon class had to participate in this drill.

Thank you to Aditi’s family, who donated a class gift card to Lakeshore last week to celebrate Aditi’s birthday. We are very appreciative for the generous gift! Also, I am sad to announce that Sean’s family is moving to San Ramon and his last day with us will be the Friday when we return, February 26th. Please say your good-byes to him and his family, and we will miss him very much!

I hope all of you have a wonderful week of vacation. I will be flying to Los Angeles and spending time friends there. Then I will be in San Diego to re-visit my college town! I am excited to go to the Zoo and Seaworld (I never went there when I lived in San Diego!). See you when we return!

Dear Families,

Thank you so much for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation week! It was such a nice week filled with flowers, supplies, cards, books, games, and treats. I am also so thankful for the class gift cards to Lakeshore and Target. These gift cards help to buy larger items for the classroom! Thank you also to those of you who helped to take our recess duties during the week, or helped to provide the recess treats or food for the luncheon. We appreciate all of your support and for taking the time to make the staff at Eaton feel special. We are thankful for you!

Here are some highlights for the week:
• Star of the Week: Chris
(On our website under “Curriculum” and “Star of the Week.”)

• Letter of the Week: L
(You can see our computer center drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.)

• Story of the Week: The 100th Day of School

• Language Arts: We talked a lot about the 100th Day of School. We read poems, stories, and completed projects to celebrate the 100th Day!

• Math: We used the 100th day of school to complete several math projects this week. One project was our 100 bead necklace that students made on Monday. Students had to make an ABCD pattern using the beads. This was also great practice for their fine motor skills. Also, we practiced skip counting by 10’s to 100 and made a book with stickers, stamps, or illustrations to count to 100.

• Computer Lab: Following the theme of the week, we made a 100 project in Kidpix this week. We chose 10 different stamps and showed that 10 groups of 10 equal 100. We also finished our Seasons pictures from last week. You can see both of these projects on our website.

• Science: We continued to learn a little bit more about penguins this week. On Thursday, we practiced our sequencing skills. Students had to put together the life cycle of the Emperor penguin by matching the pictures in the correct order.

• Social Studies: On Tuesday, we learned about Groundhog’s Day. We read some stories about groundhogs and talked about what shadows are. We made a project that shows what happens if the groundhog sees his shadow! Make sure to ask your child what happens to check their understanding of the lesson! If the groundhog sees his shadow (on a sunny day), then he gets scared and jumps back into his burrow to sleep for 6 more weeks (which means winter continues). If the groundhog does not see his shadow (on a cloudy day), then he stays outside and that means spring is coming soon! In addition to learning about Groundhog’s Day, we talked about Chinese New Year as well, which is on Valentine’s Day this year. We read some stories and learned that it will be the year of the Tiger. We made a lantern as well as a red envelope to share in some of the Chinese New Year customs.

• Assembly: This week we had an assembly by the Roots Review. Ask your child to tell you what it was about.

Thank you again to all the parents who went last Friday to the Children’s Discovery Museum. At the last moment, we ended up having nine chaperones (plus a few more offers!), which helped to keep our groups to three children each. It was perfect! We had a great time exploring the museum with our classmates! Some of the exhibits included: face-painting, making cornhusk dolls, serving pizza, shopping at the market, dancing in the theater, forming bubbles, and exploring water ways! It was a successful field trip!

The Eaton student council has started a fundraiser for the earthquake victims in Haiti. From now until Friday, February 26th, you can send in “Coins for Haiti.” There is a collection box in our room, similar to a piggy bank, where students have been adding our donations. You can also write a check payable to Red Cross. Thank you to those families that have already donated coins for this fundraiser. The students have gotten really excited to share coins for this wonderful cause!
