Dear Families,
Happy Fall! This was a short week since we have no school tomorrow and Monday was our Happy Hollow field trip! Thank you again to Mrs. Aloni, Mrs. Shindler, Mrs. Okubo, and Mrs. Okawaki for taking groups of children around the park. First, we went to the zoo and saw all the animals. Then groups went to different play areas before having lunch. Afterwards, we all watched Old King Cole as a puppet show. We had about one hour after that to play some more. It was a busy day!

• Reading & Writing: We continued Dictionary up to the letter S and completed our 17th Prince or Princess!
• Library: We did not have library this week since there is no school tomorrow. We will also be going to the Cupertino Public Library next Thursday and students get to check out 2 books. Please return those books at your own convenience because we don’t want to mix them with Eaton books.
• Math: We finished Chapter 2 on subtraction facts today! Students did well on the test today, however, please make sure to review number words such as one, two, three, etc.
• Computer Lab: We did not get to go this week because of the field trip.
• Science: This week we looked at our mealworms and learned that the next stage in their life cycle is the pupa stage. We also can observe our caterpillars in the pupa stage because they are in their cocoons. In circuits, we went to Mrs. Nieveen’s class and learned about fireflies!
• Assembly: We had an assembly today on the Walk-a-Thon. Fourth and fifth graders acted out good and bad procedures on how to collect pledges and how to behave on the day of the Walk-a-Thon. We are excited to raise money for our school!
• PE: This week we were with Mrs. Nieveen and we worked with bean bags. We tried to practice our balance and coordination.
• Social Studies: We learned about Johnny Appleseed this week because it was his birthday on September 26th! We are finishing up an apple art activity and we learned about how an apple tree changes through the four seasons.
Congratulations! Every student got green cards this week, so everybody took home a Super Star!!! GREAT JOB!!! Keep up the good work! Have a wonderful weekend!

• Reading & Writing: We continued Dictionary up to the letter Q and continued a few more Prince and Princesses. Also, this week we did a better job during Weekend News Journals. Continue reviewing the weekend with your child Sunday night!
• Library: Since there is no school next Friday, we will not be able to check out a new book until the following week. Your child can, however, always bring his or her book during recess or lunch to check out another one.
• Language Arts: Next week we will not be doing centers since it is a short week. This week we tried getting used to the procedures for centers. Most of us are starting to do ABC order by ourselves in spelling, but remember to check the second or third letters! Writing sentences on the back is a challenge for some students. In computer center, we have to remember to SAVE our work before we quit! We are getting used to typing on the keyboard. In poetry center, I am seeing lots of beautiful handwriting! In vocabulary center, be careful to spell the words correctly! Also, we started Scholastic News and students have to remember to complete the activity on the back! Finally, practice retelling the 5 sentences at home for listening center (character, beginning, middle, end, conclusion) and remember to draw a colored picture afterwards!
• Math: We are continuing to work on subtraction facts this week. Students need to remember to check their work and be careful when the sign switches from – to +.
• Computer Lab: This week, we used Kidpix to make an alphabet picture. We used the stamps in Kidpix and tried to find different pictures that begin with the same letter as the alphabet. We printed out our pictures at the end of class.
• Science: We observed the larva stage of mealworms this week. We learned that insects have 3 body parts, 6 legs, and 2 antennas. We went to Mrs. Bachelor’s class during Tuesday circuits and we made a life cycle of a butterfly! We are watching our caterpillars eat, eat, eat and they are starting to make cocoons! Also we did an activity where we counted the legs of different bugs to see who were worms, insects, arachnids, or myriapods!
• Buddies: This week we saw our buddies for the second time. We talked about Fall and made a picture using the colors of fall and observed nature with our senses.
• PE: This week we also had Mrs. Bachelor teaching us and we played a game called Squirrels in Trees. This game teaches cooperation and is good for cardio!

Our first week of homework and sharing went very well! Also, today’s Friday Folder will have the sharing evaluation form, so you can see which areas your child can work on. Please remember to practice at home and eventually try to have them memorize all the words and sentences. Great start!
We have enough volunteers now! Thank you to Mrs. Shaaban, Mrs. Okubo, Mrs. Maruta, and Mrs. Lee for offering to volunteer on Friday afternoons, and Mrs. Okawaki, Mrs. Chang (David), and Mrs. Chang (Brian) for volunteering during computer lab on Monday afternoons! • Reading & Writing: We worked on our dictionary letters up to M this week. We also read Diary of a Worm and started our Weekend News journals. Please remember to review the weekend events with your child every Sunday night or Monday morning so that they have ideas to write about during journal time. Also, we continued Prince and Princess writing this week.
• Library: Remember to bring the Eaton library books back to school on Friday so your child can check out a new book! We go every Friday and Mrs. Glass reads to us!
• Assembly: We had a performance today called “Asheba” about exploring music and culture of the Carribean! It was great!
• Language Arts: We started our literacy centers this week. You will see this packet (with a green cover sheet) almost every week in the Friday Folder. Your child receives 0, 1, 2, or 3 stars each week for finishing all the activities in centers. This is a growing process. Your child may only receive 1 or 2 stars in the beginning of the year, but I hope by the end of the year, they will receive 3 stars in all categories. I have included our literacy center rubric (how I evaluate work) in this newsletter so you can see how to work with your children on improving their scores. The most difficult center is usually the listening center. This week, we did the listening center together so the students understood how to write five sentences.
The five sentences in listening center include:
o This story was about _______. (Who is the character?)
o In the beginning, _________. (Where or what’s happening?)
o In the middle, ___________. (What is the problem?)
o In the end, ______________. (What is the solution?)

• Math: We have finished Chapter 1! Students took the chapter test on Thursday and EVERYONE did well!!! GREAT JOB! Now we are looking at Chapter 2, which is on subtraction facts. We are completing the math word problems in our workbooks together for extra practice!
• Computer Lab: We explored KidPix this week by drawing pictures using the different tools: pencils, markers, stamps, paint bucket, etc.
• Art: We had our first visit with the art teacher, Mrs. Blakeslee this week! She taught us about our primary colors and abstract art. This is a note from her:
The first art activity for the primary grades will focus on primary colors and lines. Abstract art will be discussed and the students will learn about tempera paint as a medium, and practice handling a brush. The artist focus will be on Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian abstract artist born in 1866. He was influenced by Eastern philosophies and brought great spirituality to his art. He taught at the famous Bauhaus School in Germany prior to WWII, was an author, and his influence on modern painting and sculpture was immeasurable. Students will spend no more than 3 sessions to complete a Kandinsky-like abstract painting.
• Science: Yikes! We started our first unit on Insects! We said hello to our new classroom pets… our mealworms! We are learning to observe them and take notes about what we see. We also will be studying butterflies this trimester.
• Social Studies: Thank you to Mrs. Aloni and Mrs. Shindler, who came in on Tuesday afternoon to teach us about the Jewish New Year! Shana Tova!
• Super Stars: Unfortunately, we had a lot of YELLOW super stars this week. Please remember to talk to your child about following school and classroom rules. We need to try our best everyday!

After Back to School Night!

Remember to write ONE check to Scholastic Books. If you haven’t already, please also turn in the Eaton and Cupertino library permission slips by Monday.
* Sunday, September 16th: Cupertino Jubilee Chicken Dance @ 1:00pm
The first graders from Eaton will perform the Chicken Dance at the Cupertino Jubilee which is held at City Hall (next to the library). Plan on coming if you are available that day! Thank you to those of you who were able to attend Back-to-School Night last night! I hope you found my website informational and helpful to learn about our classroom. Remember to turn in the following items as soon as possible: $150 classroom donation, library permission slip, website permission slip, and volunteer form. Thank you to those of you who are offering to volunteer in our class!

Word Wall Words: Names of classmates
• Language Arts: We have worked on the alphabet letters up to I. We practice the sounds of each letter and brainstorm words for our Dictionaries. We also started learning about School Words in the vocabulary center.
• Reading: We continued to review the meaning of important words from Rosie’s Walk such as: across, around, over, under, past, and through. We created our own stories called Pete the Pencil to show our understanding of these words. Please read the story they made with your children to help them master the vocabulary.
• Library: We had our first library visit with Mrs. Glass. We went over the rules and expectations of library time. Each Friday, we will listen to a story read-aloud by Mrs. Glass, and then we can check out one book to take home. Please remember to bring back library books every Friday or else your child cannot check out another book.
• Writing: This week we learned the five important parts that make up a friendly letter when we wrote the Back-to-School letters. We will be writing more letters throughout the year. Remember to keep checking the “Classwork” section in our website to read about our Prince and Princesses.
• Kindness Journal: We started our first entry in our Kindness Journal. This is a project to help students learn to do nice things for others and to have manners. We will be typing the journals on the computer on our Kindness website.
• Math: This week we used cubes to help us with our addition facts. We learned the rule that numbers can be “turned around” in addition. For example: 1+2 = 2+1 because 1+2=3 and 2+1=3. Please remember to look over the work that comes home each Friday and review the problems your child missed. Also, word problems are the green/aqua colored pages and we usually do these as a whole class. Please try and have your child practice similar problems at home to see if they can solve the problems by themselves.
Next week, the complete homework packet and sharing will begin. Please have your child ready to be tested in vocabulary and spelling by Thursday, and turn in homework packets on Friday. I am excited to hear your children’s sharing and please remember your child must be prepared with at least 4 complete sentences and have an object or picture to show.
Also on Monday, we will start our Weekend News journals. These journals are to encourage children to write freely without worrying about spelling or grammatical mistakes. Students usually write about what they did over the weekend, however, if nothing exciting happened, they can write about anything they want. It really helps if you can talk with your child Sunday night or Monday morning to review the weekend events. For example: did you go to a special place? Did they see a friend? What did you do at home? Are they excited about an upcoming event? Etc. Thank you for your help!
This week we all did a great job getting green super stars for great behavior. However, I still gave many warnings and reminders about sitting nicely on the carpet, working quietly at the desks, and following Eaton rules. Please continue reminding your children to follow these rules. Thank you. See you on Monday!

Remember to write ONE check to Scholastic Books. If you haven’t already, please also turn in the Eaton and Cupertino library permission slips by Monday.
* Sunday, September 16th: Cupertino Jubilee Chicken Dance @ 1:00pm
The first graders from Eaton will perform the Chicken Dance at the Cupertino Jubilee which is held at City Hall (next to the library). Plan on coming if you are available that day! There is a green permission slip in today’s Friday Folder. Please fill out the bottom to let us know if you WILL or WILL NOT be coming.
* Monday, September 24th: Happy Hollow Field Trip
There is a blue permission slip in today’s Friday Folder. Please fill it out and return it by next Monday, September 17th. We can have parent chaperones, but we must carpool there because there is not room on the bus for parents.

Thank you for those of you who have given generous donations for our classroom! In addition to the first grade supply list, we ask each family to donate $150 (payable to Eaton Elementary School) in order to cover the costs for all the fun assemblies, field trips, projects, and activities we complete all year long. We appreciate your contribution and support!
The first few days of school have gone by very smoothly. I have been pleased with the student effort during our projects and activities. We have been going over class rules and procedures this week, and reminding students to be on their best behavior. Here are some highlights from the week:
• Language Arts: We have begun our phonics and vocabulary lessons by beginning a picture dictionary. I have been emphasizing neatness and proper handwriting in their work. We worked on A, B, C, and D.
• Social Studies: We are learning about ourselves and our families. We made a family portrait to share with the class. Also, we discovered all the countries that our families have come from and drew flags around the world.
• Writing: We have been learning about our classmates. We select a Prince or Princess of the day. The students interview them and then we write a paragraph about that person. Some areas we are beginning to focus on are indenting paragraphs, capital letters in the beginning of sentences, punctuation, and sentence variety.
• Math: We began our first chapter in our textbook on addition facts. We are practicing basic computation and also word problems using addition. Please review the work that gets sent home. Most of the word problems are done as a whole class so some students need more practice doing them independently.
• Physical Education: We began our PE this week. We have PE class on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students have to run around the track once and then we play games afterwards.
• Fire Drill: On Thursday, we practiced our first fire drill. We lined up quietly when the fire bell rang and walked onto the field until we were excused. We did a great job!
• Music: We have started our first grade music program. We are singing fun songs led by the first grade teachers.
• Nutrition Policy: We are continuing our nutrition program at our school and we are only allowed to have one treat per month. Therefore, if your child has a birthday and you would like to share something with the class, we can only allow items such as pencils, erasers, or stickers.
• Friday Folders: Today you are receiving our weekly Friday Folders. Please review all the work that is sent home with your child and sign the back of the folder. Every week I monitor each child’s behavior using Super Stars. If your child receives green cards all week long, they will take home the Super Star (this week is the yellow bus). Please acknowledge these Super Stars and post them up in your house to remind children of good behavior!!!
I am including the September book order with this newsletter. This first order is very important because it gives our classroom free materials depending on the amount ordered. Please look through the book orders and if you are interested in purchasing books, make ONE check payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. Please return these orders by Monday, September 10th.
We are fortunate to have an ELD aide to help out in our classroom everyday. Her name is Seema Saxena (Mrs. Seema) and she rotates between Mrs. Tambe’s class and ours from 9:00am – 12:20pm everyday. Mrs. Seema is a wonderful help to us! I am looking forward to meeting all of you next Thursday at Back to School Night! Have a wonderful weekend!

Last Day of School
Dear Families,
This week was super busy! On Monday, we went to Almaden Lake Park by bus. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to ride the light rail this year. The students had lunch, played on the play structure, and ate popsicles that day. It was hot!
Then on Tuesday, we had the Talent Show. Catherine and Julia played the piano and some of the students performed the Cha Cha Slide! Even the teachers performed Grease at the end! If you missed the performances, you can go to the PHOTOS section of our classroom website: www.geocities.com/missyu_grace and I have added all the videos there. You can just click on the arrow to watch the performances!
On Wednesday, we prepared for our musical and had a dress rehearsal in front of Kindergarten and Third grade. In the afternoon, we worked on an art project and made a landscape picture.
Thursday was our musical performance! Although it was incredibly hot in the MP room, the students all did a great job singing and dancing A Musical Year! If anyone has a video of the performance, please let me know because I would like to make a copy of it. Thank you to Mrs. Hothan (Michael’s mother) who went to pick up popsicles for the children right after the musical because it was so hot!
Today was Breakfast and a Book! We had donuts and juice for breakfast, and then we went to different classrooms to read books.
It is always hard to say goodbye to all my students at the end of each year. I have seen your children grow and learn so much over the year and I am so proud of them for their hard work. I would appreciate it if you kept in touch with me from time to time to let me know how your children are doing. My address is: 20814 Beauchamps Court, Saratoga, CA 95070. My present to the students is a music CD to remember all of our first grade songs! Enjoy the music! In addition, I would like to especially thank Julia’s mom, Catherine’s mom, Yo’s mom, and Mayu’s mom for coming every Friday afternoon for an hour to prepare homework packets, centers folders, spelling, vocabulary, and Friday folders! I would also like to thank Moe’s mom and Hitoharu’s mom for coming every Wednesday afternoon to help in computer lab. Everyone else, thank you for all of your support this year! Many of you came on field trips, gave classroom donations, and provided supplies for our class. I have made a personalized notepad from our classroom for all of you to say thank you for a wonderful year! Miss Yu will miss you!!! =) Have a wonderful summer!

* Monday, June 11th: End of the Year First Grade Trip
We will be taking the bus at 9:15am to Almaden Lake Park and we will return by 2:30pm. Please have your child pack a BAG lunch that can be thrown away at the park. Thank you for all the volunteers. Unfortunately, we can only bring 3 chaperones on the bus: Mrs. Hagiwara (Hitoharu), Mrs. Lee (Jaewoo), and Mrs. Wang (Patricia). Everyone else is welcome to meet us at the park. Attached to this newsletter are the directions. Mrs. Park (Geoffrey) and Mrs. Park (Julia) have offered to transport lunches and drinks. Thank you!

The cha cha slide group will be performing 18th after lunch. If you would like to watch, it would probably be best to come around 1:45pm to the MP room. The dancers that turned in their permission slip are: Anushka, Geoffrey, Hitoharu, Jaewoo, Janani, Jonathan, Lenny, Mayu, Michael, Moe, Patricia, Reva, Sammy, Tomoki, William, and Yo. Please remember to wear a white shirt and blue bottoms (shorts, pants, skirt) to school on this day!
* Thursday, June 14th: First Grade Musical at 1:30pm in MP room
Please plan on attending our musical on this afternoon! Your child will be bringing their costumes home right after the performance.
* Friday, June 15th: Last Day of School! Dismissal is at 12:20pm.

We are at the end of the year! I will be sending home everything your child has done in class over the next few days. There is no homework, tests, or sharing next week, so please keep everything at home! Here are some highlights from this week:
• Language Arts: We finished our last literacy centers this week. We read Five Little Sharks Swimming in the Sea and worked on Animal vocabulary 4. I am sending all the vocabulary sheets home that your child completed during the year. I will put them in the back of the Vocabulary Folder for you to review with your child if you want.
• Writing: We are doing such a wonderful job on Writer’s Workshop! The students are busily working on more pieces to finish by the end of the year. They are showing good understanding of the writing process, from prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, to publishing! The favorite part is the Author’s chair because they get to read their published piece to the class!
• Math: Today we finished the last chapter in our math book! We took the test on two-digit addition and subtraction. Most students are doing great with computation, but struggle with understanding two-step word problems.
• Computer Lab: We had our last computer lab this week. Many students finished another Writer’s Workshop cover! Great job!
• Music: We were fortunate to watch two musicals this week! On Thursday, we watched the third graders perform Who Pushed Humpty? Today, we listened to the upper grade chorus sing! Next week will be our turn!!! We had a dress rehearsal on Monday and it went smoothly. We are excited to show all of you our singing and dancing!
• Social Studies: This week we talked about Father’s Day. We made a present that we will give to our Father’s on June 17th.
• Assembly: Today we had an assembly called Around the World songs. Our presenter sang songs and told stories from different countries.
Next week will be very exciting and busy for our class! I am cherishing these last few days being your child’s teacher. I have really enjoyed working with all of them and am starting to get sad to have to say goodbye next week! Have a wonderful weekend!

Miss Yu will be performing a dance routine at 11:00am. If you are free, come watch and have fun!
* Monday, June 4th: Costumes for the Musical (if you haven’t yet)
We are doing our first dress rehearsal on Monday. If you haven’t already, please bring your child’s costume to school in a bag with his or her name on it, and LABEL each article of clothing with your child’s full name and room number. We will be keeping the costumes at school until June 14th.
* Monday, June 11th: End of the Year First Grade Trip
We are going to the Almaden Lake Park from 9am – 2pm. A permission slip was sent home on Wednesday afternoon. Please return the permission slip as soon as possible. I can’t believe it’s June! This week was very busy since it was a short week. In addition to our regular schedule, we had an emergency drill on Tuesday between recess and lunch. All the students practiced what they have to do in an earthquake or fire, and all the teachers had to also practice our emergency jobs. It went smoothly but was very hectic! We also had the Volunteer Tea of Wednesday. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped so much in our classroom this year!

• Language Arts: We finally had time to finish centers this week! We will have one more week of centers and homework packets.
• Writing: We have been working hard finishing up our final pieces in Writer’s Workshop. We are hoping to finish at least one more before the end of the year.
• Math: This week has been all about two-digit subtraction facts. We have been reviewing how to subtract the ones column first, and then the tens column. However, some students are getting confused when it becomes a problem like 17-8 and they subtract 7-8! We will practice these facts one more week.
• Science: We are saying goodbye to our mealworms this week! They have been fun to observe, but now it is time for them to go home!
• Computer Lab: This week and next week we will be trying to finish up the Writer’s Workshop brainstorm maps in Kidspiration. Students will have one more opportunity to visit the computer lab next Wednesday.
• Music: This was our last session with Mrs. More. We played with Boomwhackers and wooden cylinders to the beats of different songs. It has been a fun year!
• Art: It was also our last session with Mrs. Blakeslee this week. Almost all of us finished our Native American pictures and stories and we shared them to the class.
• Social Studies: This week we went to Miss Salter’s class for Circuits. She talked about the new Food Pyramid and taught us some facts about nutrition and health.
Today we started implementing our new lunch procedures. Next year our school will be growing by several classrooms so all the kids won’t fit on the lunch tables at one time. We are now staggering lunch so that primary grade students eat from 12:25 – 12:40 and then play after, whereas upper grade students will play first and then eat from 12:40-12:55.
I hope to see many of you tomorrow at the International Festival! I will be performing the first act in the morning at 11:00am with a few dancers from my church group, Eight Count. We will be dancing a short hip hop and stomp routine. It should be fun so come and watch if you are free! Remember to fill out the Eaton Survey if you haven’t yet! Thanks!

Dear Families,
Thank you for coming last night to Open House! It was wonderful to see all of your families enjoying the hard work your children have done in first grade this year! I think the students did a great job being your “tour guide” for the evening! All the work you saw will be sent home the last week of school.
I also wanted to thank everyone for making me feel special this week! I was completely surprised to see our door poster with all the kids’ writing on each flower petal. It is so beautiful and I was very touched by it! Also, I want to thank all of you for your special gifts and cards. I am very grateful to have supportive families like you and I am thankful for your kindness. Thank you so much!
Once again, we had a different schedule this week so we did not complete centers! This week we had a special in-class presentation by the Environmental Volunteers. They came on Tuesday and Thursday morning to teach us about Nature in our Neighborhood. On Tuesday, we learned about different bugs, birds, and looked in the dirt to find creatures. We learned that the four things we need to survive are: water, soil, sun, and air, and the six things we need to do to stay alive are: eat, drink, move, breathe, grow, and have babies! On Thursday, we went outside around our school to make a list of all the things we saw that belong to nature. Then we came back to make large posters of everything we saw and shared with the class! This was a great in-class field trip for our class!

• Science: We finally let our butterflies go free today! They were starting to get very sad because they couldn’t fly anywhere, but we let them go today! We are also saying goodbye to our mealworms.
• Computer Lab: This week we worked on our cover page of our memory books. We used Kid Pix and learned how to change text font and size.

Less than one month of school is remaining! The dates listed above are some of the important events taking place from now until the last day of school. Please mark your calendars!
Our daily schedule is also changing in this last month because there are so many activities left to finish. We did not do centers this week because it was a short week and because we also went on the Insect Fair field trip on Tuesday. We may or may not continue centers depending on if we have time in the next few weeks.
We had a great time looking at insects and spiders on Tuesday at Sanborn Park! Thank you to Mrs. Woo for coming with us! We went on a nature hike, ate lunch, then touched and looked at many creatures including walking sticks, tarantulas, bees, and millipedes! We even were offered the opportunity to eat cooked mealworms!!! Nobody in our class tried one, but many other first graders in other classes did! Eeeew!

This is an easier chapter for most students because it deals with computation, however, I am still noticing silly mistakes and am encouraging students to check their work!
• Science: We have butterflies now! Our caterpillars emerged from the chrysalis and now we have four painted lady butterflies. We will keep them until Open House and then we will let them be free! Also, several of our mealworms turned into beetles! It has been exciting watching our insects change! This week we also started learning about the life cycle of frogs. We completed several activities and stories to learn about how frogs grow and change.
• Computer Lab: Since we didn’t have centers this week, we worked on our Kindness journals in computer lab. A few students continued working on their Very Hungry Caterpillar stories. We are hoping to finish them in time for display next week during Open House!
• Music: We sang some fun May songs and even got to dance with the May Pole. We used wooden sticks and ribbons to make music.
• Art: This was our second to last art session with Mrs. Blakeslee. We finished up our Indian symbol stories and drawings. Next time we will be sharing the stories to the class.
• Assembly: This week the West Bay Opera came to entertain us! They did a great job using music to tell a story! Congratulations also to Catherine, who was our Author of the Month today! She read her expository piece on the life cycle of a mealworm. Great job!

Also, we started a new circuit this week, and Mrs. Burgess worked on a pizza project to review different fractions.
• Social Studies: We spent time this week writing a poem about ourselves. This I Am poem will be displayed at Open House.
• Science: Our caterpillars formed a chrysalis this week! We saw them transform by climbing to the top of their containers and hanging like a letter J. Then they formed a cocoon all around them! Now we are waiting for them to emerge as painted lady butterflies. We also continued observing our mealworms. Many are also starting to enter the pupa stage.
• Computer Lab: We continued our The Very Hungry Caterpillar books in Powerpoint. Students who finished continued working on their prewriting mindmaps for Writer’s Workshop. These mindmaps are made using Kidspiration and are on any topic the student chooses.
• Music: Today you are receiving a copy of all the words of the songs that the students will be performing in the first grade musical at the end of the year. Please have your child practice singing the songs and memorizing all the words! Save the date: the performance is on Thursday, June 14th at 1:30pm in the MP Room.

The ELD classes throughout the Cupertino District are full! We are only supposed to have 20 students, however, there’s no more room at any school! Therefore, we met our 21st student on Thursday! • Math: This week we worked on answering word problems with time and calendar. Many of the problems are difficult for the students so we have been completing math as a whole class for several of the pages. Also, we started a new circuit this week, and Mrs. Burgess worked on a pizza project to review different fractions.
• Social Studies: We spent time this week writing a poem about ourselves. This I Am poem will be displayed at Open House.
• Science: Our caterpillars formed a chrysalis this week! We saw them transform by climbing to the top of their containers and hanging like a letter J. Then they formed a cocoon all around them! Now we are waiting for them to emerge as painted lady butterflies. We also continued observing our mealworms. Many are also starting to enter the pupa stage.
• Computer Lab: We continued our The Very Hungry Caterpillar books in Powerpoint. Students who finished continued working on their prewriting mindmaps for Writer’s Workshop. These mindmaps are made using Kidspiration and are on any topic the student chooses.
• Music: Today you are receiving a copy of all the words of the songs that the students will be performing in the first grade musical at the end of the year. Please have your child practice singing the songs and memorizing all the words! Save the date: the performance is on Thursday, June 14th at 1:30pm in the MP Room.

We got our insects this week!!! We have 4 caterpillars and we are watching them eat and grow. We also have about 100 mealworms and they don’t smell very good =( But the students are definitely excited!!!

Dear Families,
I hope all of you had a nice and relaxing spring break last week. I went to San Diego to visit some old college friends during the first weekend, but stayed in the area the rest of the week. I also got sick for a few days with the gloomy weather, but got better by the end of the week!
We had a new student join our classroom this week! His name is Tomoki and his family just moved here from Japan. Please join me in welcoming him to Eaton! You can also read more about him in the Classwork section of our website under Prince and Princesses.
Also, fantastic job to everyone on the weather reports! I was so amazed by all the hard work that was put into the weather posters and I could tell how much many of you prepared for the presentations too. I hope your children had fun being a meteorologist for a day! We will be displaying the posters in our classroom for Open House and they will be returned at the end of the year!

• Math: We took our Chapter 10 test on measurement today. We have been practicing reading the time on digital and analog clocks by the hour and half-hour. A little bit harder has been finding the elapsed time or working on word problems.
• Social Studies: This week we went to Miss Allard’s class to learn about needs and wants. Miss Allard is the teacher that is now in Room 26 because Mrs. Barelli went on maternity leave.
• Science: We have started our Insect Unit, first on caterpillars and butterflies. We read some books and looked at some real-life pictures of different caterpillars changing into butterflies.
• Assembly: This week we had two assemblies. The first one was watching the second graders perform their musical, Goin’ Buggy! The second was watching Chinyakare, or Zimbabwe dancing.
• Computer Lab: We are continuing our The Very Hungry Caterpillar books in Powerpoint. Some students have finished and worked on Starfall in their free time.
• Jump Rope for Heart: On Thursday after recess, the whole school went outside and we all jump roped for 20 minutes together! We remember that it’s important to exercise for our bodies, and also to help raise money for the American Heart Association. Thank you for those of you who participated in this fundraiser.
• Art: This week with Mrs. Blakeslee, we worked with clay. We shaped and formed little pots.
• Music: We saw Mrs. More this week and we sang songs for April. We first played an April Fools song game, then we worked on the Boomwhackers to hear notes on a scale, and finally we played instruments to accompany a song. We also are starting to meet more frequently as a first grade group to prepare for our end of the year musical in June. You will receive more information in later weeks.

We have been in school for 142 days! I can’t believe how fast the year is flying by! When we come back from Spring Break, it will quickly become May and we will be busy with preparing for Open House and our First grade musical! Here are some highlights from the week:

• Math: We reviewed measuring capacity this week using cups, pints, quarts, and liters. We also reviewed measuring length using inches and centimeters, and measuring weight using pounds or kilograms. We are starting Chapter 11 on Time and Calendar.
• Social Studies: This week we went to Mrs. Tambe’s class for circuits and learned about streets in the community and important signs such as traffic lights or stop signs. We made some to add to our community wall.
• Science: We finished our science books this week! We learned how to read a real weather map from the San Jose Mercury Newspaper and we also summarized the weather during March. Have your child teach you what they learned in their weather books! We will be learning about insects after spring break! Eeek!
• Enrichment Day: What a fun day of activities, organized by the PTO! First, we went to a presentation by the Cub Scouts, and then we learned about microscopes. Afterwards, we heard about fire, and finally we watched a presentation on windsurfing!
• Computer Lab: We are continuing our The Very Hungry Caterpillar books in Powerpoint. We are doing a great job writing and illustrating our books!
Congratulations to Reva, who was our Author of the Month this afternoon! She shared about our field trip to the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens. Great job!

Dear Families,
Unfortunately, I am still seeing students playing after school on the grass or the play structure. We need to enforce the Eaton school rules, which is not playing until 3:45pm, even if an adult is present. This is due to our school being liable for any injuries that occur from 3:05pm to 3:45pm. Please help remind your children it is not play time.
Also, we are finished with the Book It Reading program! It finished in March, so we will not be sending home reading logs for April, May, or June. However, I highly encourage everyone to continue reading every night!

• Writing: We have been doing a lot of expository writing. Almost everyone is finished with the first Weather piece and several students are starting their third topic on whatever they choose! We also spent some time writing about our field trip to the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens. We drafted and published these this week. • Math: This week we moved on from measuring length to measuring weight. We compared objects and used vocabulary words such as heavy versus light and also began talking about different measurements of capacity, specifically cup, pint, quart, and liter. This is a challenging topic for some students. We will continue reviewing different measurements next week.
• Social Studies: We went to Miss Salter’s room and she taught us about the environment. We learned that nature is an important part of our community and made trees and plants to add to our community project. This week we also learned about people in the community who help others. We chose our own community helpers to make as a social studies activity.
• Science: We are almost finished with our Weather unit. This week we illustrated our rain poems and also reviewed the water cycle stages: evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. The last science unit is on Insects. We began learning about the life cycle of a caterpillar using the story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. We are making our own versions of the story in the computer lab and will be working on our books for the next few weeks.
• Assembly: We had an assembly today called “Solids, Liquids, and Gases” by the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. This assembly is aligned to the first science unit we completed in the beginning of the year. It was very exciting for the kids to watch live science experiments!
• Art and music were cancelled this week. Instead, we did our own art activity on Spring Blossom trees. The students did a great job making the blossoms beautiful!

Dear Families,
Unfortunately, I am still seeing students playing after school on the grass or the play structure. We need to enforce the Eaton school rules, which is not playing until 3:45pm, even if an adult is present. This is due to our school being liable for any injuries that occur from 3:05pm to 3:45pm. Please help remind your children it is not play time.
Also, we are finished with the Book It Reading program! It finished in March, so we will not be sending home reading logs for April, May, or June. However, I highly encourage everyone to continue reading every night!

• Writing: We have been doing a lot of expository writing. Almost everyone is finished with the first Weather piece and several students are starting their third topic on whatever they choose! We also spent some time writing about our field trip to the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens. We drafted and published these this week. Congratulations to Reva, who will be our Author of the Month next Friday and will share about our field trip to the school!
• Math: This week we moved on from measuring length to measuring weight. We compared objects and used vocabulary words such as heavy versus light and also began talking about different measurements of capacity, specifically cup, pint, quart, and liter. This is a challenging topic for some students. We will continue reviewing different measurements next week.
• Social Studies: We went to Miss Salter’s room and she taught us about the environment. We learned that nature is an important part of our community and made trees and plants to add to our community project. This week we also learned about people in the community who help others. We chose our own community helpers to make as a social studies activity.
• Science: We are almost finished with our Weather unit. This week we illustrated our rain poems and also reviewed the water cycle stages: evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. The last science unit is on Insects. We began learning about the life cycle of a caterpillar using the story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. We are making our own versions of the story in the computer lab and will be working on our books for the next few weeks.

• Writing: Writer’s Workshop is going great! We had more than half of the class finish publishing their first piece on Weather senses. A few students even finished publishing their second piece, an autobiography! This week, we also spent some time reading rain poems and wrote our own free verse rain poems.
• Math: We have been working with measurement this week. We practiced measuring things first using a paper clip. Then we learned how to use rulers and measured items using centimeters and inches. Continue to practice using rulers. Our homework next week will have some problems with inches and centimeters to practice at home.
• Social Studies: We went to Mrs. Bachelor’s room this week for circuits. We talked about different types of homes in the community and we designed our own homes.
• Science: We continued a few experiments this week in weather. We tested out different fabrics and found out that nylon is the best material to wear on a rainy day. Also, we went on our field trip to the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens on Thursday. On this field trip, we had three rotations to learn about nature: exploring rivers, finding bugs, and identifying leaves. Thank you to Mr. Hung, Mrs. Nozaki, Mrs. Wang, and Mrs. Yokoyama for standing in the sun chasing after bugs!
• Fire Drill: We practiced an earthquake drill on Tuesday and practiced our procedure for evacuating classrooms. Eaton is putting a higher priority on training and preparing both students and teachers for emergency situations.
• Assembly: We had an assembly today called “Sherlock Holmes Takes the Case.” Students watched performers act out a mystery!
• Music: We are starting to rehearse for our First Grade musical, which will be the last week of school. I am enforcing the importance of singing and learning the words to the songs. I would like to see all students participating and trying their best!
With the warm weather coming early this year, some students need additional reminders of school policies. Remember that it is important the students are sitting on the bench before school. We should not be playing on the blacktop. Also, after school, students cannot be playing on the playground or running around until 3:45. Thank you for helping us enforce the Eaton School rules.

The leprechauns came over the weekend! We came back to our classroom on Monday and found leprechaun footprints all over, including on our traps! The chairs were knocked over and room was a mess! But we did find the leprechaun’s pot of gold! Here are some highlights from the week:

• Writing: Some students have already finished their first piece in Writer’s Workshop on Weather Senses. We learned how to publish a piece and make a final copy to share with others. It is important that students know how to work independently during writing.
• Math: This week we are reviewing symmetry, fractions, and probability. We also started Chapter 10 on measurement. We talked about opposite words such as long vs. short, tall vs. short, heavy vs. light.
• Social Studies: We are beginning our community circuit this week. This week we went to Mrs. Burgess’ class. We learned about different types of buildings and businesses and made our own models!
• Science: We used real thermometers this week and are continuing to practice reading temperatures. We predicted and did an experiment to find out the temperature of hot, cold, and mixed water! We also learned that darker colors absorb heat more than lighter colors.
• Computer: We did a math activity this week using KidPix and fractions. Students had to show 1/2 , 1/3, and ¼ on circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles.
• Art: We are presently in the middle of our Native American “Winter Counts.” For those who finished their Winter Counts early, they worked on a totem pole activity.
• Music: This week we watched the Upper Grade chorus perform using instruments and singing. It was good for students to see the fourth and fifth graders performing because we will be doing a first grade performance at the end of the year too and it is important everyone sings during music to learn the songs!
Today, you will receive your child’s progress report for the second trimester. Please remember that your child does not receive grades for the regular language arts report card. Instead, the fourth and fifth pages are the ELD language arts report card for listening/speaking, reading, and writing. Also included for students who have been here since August are the CELDT scores that were taken in October. An overall score (not just listening or speaking) in early advanced and advanced means your child is ready to transition out of ELD. If your child scored in the beginning, early intermediate, or intermediate areas, I will assess them again in May to determine if they are ready to be transitioned. Mrs. Rowe is having a meeting Tuesday morning if you have questions on this process. Have a great weekend!

Weather Presentation
On Monday, April 23th, we will have a “Weather Party!” Students will pretend to be meteorologists, people who study and predict the weather. They will prepare an imaginary weather report that includes a visual and writing, and they will share it to the class. The presentations can be as creative as you like (use the computer, markers, cut from magazines, photographs, miscellaneous items, etc)!
1. Pick a city or country anywhere in the world.
(i.e. Cupertino, California or Orlando, Florida or Bangkok, Thailand)
2. Pick an imaginary day.
(i.e. January 1st, 1950 or July 30th, 2010)
3. Pick a weather (sunny, cloudy, fog, snow, rain, lightning, etc.) and temperature (i.e. 30 degrees Fahrenheit, 99 degrees Fahrenheit) you would like your city or country to have that day.
*** Please make sure your weather report makes sense. For example, if it is snowing, the temperature should not be 80 degrees Fahrenheit or snowing in California in July.
4. Create a visual (i.e. poster, chart, drawing, etc.) that has:
a. Title (i.e. Storms Ahead! or Weather News, etc.)
b. City/country’s name and date
c. Picture of the weather you chose (sunny, cloudy, thunderstorms, etc.)
d. Temperature (? degrees Fahrenheit)
e. Paragraph describing the weather (Writing – described below)
f. Anything else to decorate the poster
5. Writing (8-10 sentences)
a. Title – use the same one as the poster
b. Beginning - (i.e. “Wow! It is cold!” or “Welcome to the 8:00 news!”)

If you would like to purchase books, please make ONE check payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. We will receive the books before the April spring break. Students will be receiving the second trimester grades as well as the scores from the CELDT (California English Language Development Test) that was taken in the Fall. Since there’s no school Friday, homework and library books need to be brought back on Thursday, March 22nd. Also, Friday sharers need to be ready to share on Thursday!

• Writing: We are progressing quickly in Writer’s Workshop. This week we talked about all 5 stages of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and some students are already publishing their first piece on Weather! I am excited to see the students working independently.
• Math: This week we discussed symmetry, fractions (one-half, one-third, and one-fourth), and probability! We also reviewed positional vocabulary word (near, far, next to, above, etc) and shapes.
• Social Studies: Happy St. Patrick’s Day! This week we learned about the country of Ireland, and how they celebrate this special holiday. We talked about leprechauns and read stories too. Let’s see if the leprechauns visit us over the weekend!
• Science: This week we talked about rain and thought of describing words. We made umbrellas to hang in the classroom! In addition, we did an activity to find out our class’ favorite weather! Hot weather was the favorite!
• Computer: We used Graph Club this week to graph our favorite weather. We saw line graphs, bar graphs, pie charts, picture graphs, and tables.
Congratulations to Catherine, Geoffrey, Hitoharu, Lenny, Mayu, Moe, Reva, and Sammy on doing a wonderful job at the Kindness presentation on Tuesday evening. They memorized several sentences and shared our Kindness website with the Cupertino District board members. They got an outstanding ovation and even shook hands with all the board members. I am very proud of them!
* Thursday, March 22nd: Book Orders Due and Report Cards Go Home
If you would like to purchase books, please make ONE check payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. We will receive the books before the April spring break. Students will be receiving the second trimester grades as well as the scores from the CELDT (California English Language Development Test) that was taken in the Fall. Since there’s no school Friday, homework and library books need to be brought back on Thursday, March 22nd. Also, Friday sharers need to be ready to share on Thursday!

This is a take-home project we are doing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, a holiday that began in Ireland. A few of the symbols attached to St. Patrick’s Day include leprechauns, shamrocks (4-leaf clovers), and rainbows with a pot of gold at the end. We would like students to invent a trap to capture leprechauns. Leprechauns are mythical figures in Irish folklore that trick you and take away your gold or treasure. They are very small and nobody ever sees them (of course).

The weather is beautiful! We have been measuring the temperature every day and last week our low was 49 degrees and this week our high was 69 degrees! I hope the sun stays!

• Writing: We started the first writing step in Writer’s Workshop, prewriting. This week we practiced making outlines and organizing our thoughts using Step Up to Writing. We also talked about making sentences interesting and varied. We will continue practicing prewriting using different topics including: weather, autobiography, and family.
• Math: This week we started geometry. This chapter had many vocabulary words and positional words such as: far from, next to, behind, between, etc. Please look over the math work from class and review these vocabulary concepts. We also learned different plane shapes and solid shapes.
• Science: We continued our weather unit this week. We made thermometers and learned about how thermometers are used in daily life. We are also getting better at graphing the temperature each day and recording the weather. In circuits, Mrs. Khan taught us about how rainbows are created.
• Computer: This week we spent time using KidPix to draw more pictures for our Kindness Journals.
• Music: We saw Mrs. More today and we practiced playing different instruments using patterns. We used triangles, sticks, cymbals, and drums to accompany songs.
We said good bye to Akane today =( We are sad to see her leave Eaton and we will miss her very much. Please keep in touch Akane and remember Room 8! Enjoy the warm, beautiful weekend!

• Writing: We finished publishing our final drafts of our Penguin writing pieces. Students will begin Writer’s Workshop next week.
• Math: We finished Chapter 9 on addition and subtraction facts to 20. Students are really mastering computation and that is great! Next week we will go back to Chapter 8 and work on geometry, fractions, and probability.
• Social Studies: On Thursday, we had a special guest reader from the Rotary club to talk about and celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
• Science: We began graphing the cloud cover, precipitation, wind, and temperature everyday. We made flags to help us measure the wind, and we also observed the weather using 4 of our senses. In circuits, Mrs. Barelli read us Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and we made a class book with our own fictional sentences and pictures.
• Computer: We used Kidspiration and words and pictures to show the different types of weather we observe.
This week we had an earthquake drill and we practiced what to do if there was an emergency. Also, the students had a hearing test on Thursday. Today’s Friday folder has an important Summer School application that needs to be completed and returned if you would like your child to attend in the summer. It is first-come first-serve, so please return it as soon as possible. Have a great weekend!

Our class has been invited to share a 5-10 minute presentation about our use of technology in the classroom to the Cupertino Board of Education. This is a special privilege to show the community our Kindness website and how we have used it in class. Students who can make it on the evening of March 13th will rehearse their speaking parts with me at school and may have something sent home to practice as well.
Please fill out the form below if you would like your child to participate and return it to me by Wednesday, March 7th. You must be able to bring your child to the Board Room (address above) at 6:15pm. The presentation will begin at 6:30pm and is only 5-10 minutes long. Students will be dismissed shortly thereafter.
