Dear Families,
Thank you for coming last night to Open House! It was wonderful to see all of your families enjoying the hard work your children have done in first grade this year! I think the students did a great job being your “tour guide” for the evening! All the work you saw will be sent home the last week of school.
I also wanted to thank everyone for making me feel special this week! I was completely surprised to see our door poster with all the kids’ writing on each flower petal. It is so beautiful and I was very touched by it! Also, I want to thank all of you for your special gifts and cards. I am very grateful to have supportive families like you and I am thankful for your kindness. Thank you so much!
Once again, we had a different schedule this week so we did not complete centers! This week we had a special in-class presentation by the Environmental Volunteers. They came on Tuesday and Thursday morning to teach us about Nature in our Neighborhood. On Tuesday, we learned about different bugs, birds, and looked in the dirt to find creatures. We learned that the four things we need to survive are: water, soil, sun, and air, and the six things we need to do to stay alive are: eat, drink, move, breathe, grow, and have babies! On Thursday, we went outside around our school to make a list of all the things we saw that belong to nature. Then we came back to make large posters of everything we saw and shared with the class! This was a great in-class field trip for our class!
Here are some highlights from the week:
Star of the Week: Tomoki
Poem of the Week: Green, Green Frog
Kindness is … giving a praise note to someone
Vocabulary of the Week: Animals 2
WWW: began, break, divide, laugh, sure
Next Week’s Sharing: Summer POem
(Memorize at least 4 lines and bring picture/object to show)
• Language Arts: Theme 10 We Can Do It!: Week 1
• Stories: Two Greedy Bears
• Word Families: words that rhyme with more
• Sounds: r controlled vowels or, ore, er, ir, ur
• Grammar: describing what we hear
• Writing: We finished learning about the frog life cycle this week and wrote an expository paragraph about how a tadpole changes to a frog. We also thought about what we liked best about first grade and what we hope to learn next year in second grade.
• Math: We continued two digit addition facts this week. We worked on tables and word problems together. Some students started getting confused with addition and subtraction. Please make sure to look over the math work that goes home today and see if your child made mistakes! Next week we will begin two digit subtraction facts.
• Science: We finally let our butterflies go free today! They were starting to get very sad because they couldn’t fly anywhere, but we let them go today! We are also saying goodbye to our mealworms.
• Computer Lab: This week we worked on our cover page of our memory books. We used Kid Pix and learned how to change text font and size.
• Music: We started practicing our first rehearsal with all the first graders this week. We stood on the risers and danced in front of each other. Today we are sending home a costume list. Please make sure to send in your child’s clothes by next Friday, June 1st!
Thank you again for a wonderful week! I hope you all had a great time last night in our classroom! Have a wonderful 3-day weekend!
