Dear Families,

It was great to see so many of you last week at the International Festival. I loved the beautiful costumes and I was so happy that many of you even performed!!! I hope you all had a great time eating good food, watching great acts, and being with our Eaton community! I enjoyed the afternoon as well!

Here are some highlights for the week:
• Star of the Week: Leah
(On our website under “Curriculum” and “Star of the Week.”)

• Letter of the Week: Y
(You can see our computer center drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.)

• Story of the Week: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

• Language Arts: We wrote a poem this week called, “I Am” Each line of this poem began with a sentence prompt, and students had to finish each line by thinking about things that they feel or hope or want. This poem will be displayed at Open House. In our journals, we also reviewed what we learned from Earth Day. Students had to write 2 sentences reviewing ways we can help the Earth.

• Math: This week was a review of our solid shapes! Help students to identify objects at home that are shaped like a cube, cone, cylinder, sphere, pyramid, or rectangular prism! We are in our last chapter of Math already, so we will be reviewing a lot of our old concepts in the last few weeks. One of our projects is a clock book. In Friday centers, we learned how to illustrate a clock, and how to write the numbers with proper spacing between. We added an hour and minute hand as well to our clocks.

• Computer Lab: Students finished the writing portion of their Caterpillar stories in Powerpoint, and began illustrating their adapted stories in Kidpix! Students are able to go at their own pace in this project, completing one picture, or completing four pictures, depending on their focus and hard work. We will be continuing this project for the next 3 weeks before Open House.

• Science: Everyday we continue to feed our silkworms mulberry leaves and observe our silkworms growing. On Friday centers, we actually measured the length of our silkworm to show that it has grown bigger! Also, in science, we are using our senses to write about school. This week, we wrote about things that we see in school, and we illustrated our writing. We also learned how to make a pop-up picture!

• Assembly: This week, we watched the Roots Revue assembly on Friday. Also, on Thursday, we went on our field trip to the Montgomery Theater in Downtown San Jose to watch the play, “Once On This Island,” by the Children’s Musical Theater. Thank you to Edison and Kumiko’s mom for coming with us and experiencing a school bus ride! It was an amazing performance with a huge cast, live orchestra, lighting, sound, dancing, singing, and even an intermission! We were truly blown away by the talented performers, some of whom were just a little bit older than us! Thank you for being flexible with the early arrival time of 8:30am and the late dismissal!

Have a great weekend! It is May! Enjoy the sunny weather and I will see all of you on Monday!

Dear Families,

Welcome back to school! I hope all of you had a nice spring vacation whether you stayed at home or traveled somewhere. I didn’t go anywhere, but it was nice to have a week off! I spent two days in the classroom, went to Half Moon Bay and Berkeley to celebrate my sister’s birthday, took a 6-hour yoga workshop, and got my side yard paved. It was a productive vacation for me!

Here are some highlights for the week:
• Star of the Week: Keona
(On our website under “Curriculum” and “Star of the Week.”)

• Letter of the Week: W
(You can see our computer center drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.)

• Story of the Week: Curious George Plants a Tree

• Language Arts: In our journals this week, we had to write at least two sentences about our vacation. I wanted students to try and write their two sentences without using the word “and.” Also, I had them practice how to determine whether their sentence is a run-on sentence, and if so, they had to figure out where to add periods and capitals to break up their sentences. Later in the week, we learned a song called, “The Twelve Days of Spring.” It is to the same tune as “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” but the words are changed to talk about different vegetables, plants, and fruits, that are being planted by a family. We illustrated this song by making a book in class.

• Math: We started our final chapter in our Kindergarten math books. This chapter is starting with solid shapes. We had to identify plane shapes, such as squares, circles, rectangles, and triangles. Then we learned solid shapes, such as cubes, pyramids, cones, rectangular prisms, and spheres. Practice finding these shapes in everyday objects around your house. Students need to be able to identify these plane and solid shapes independently. Continue skip-counting and estimating 10, 20, and 30.

• Computer Lab: We are starting a long term project in the computer lab using Powerpoint and Kidpix illustrations. We are writing and illustrating an adapted story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” using our own personal details. This week we focused on typing the words for our personalized stories. These books will hopefully be completed by Open House for you to read!

• Science: This week, we received our silkworms! They hatched from their eggs, and were very small earlier in the week. I have been giving them fresh mulberry leaves each day and they have already grown so fast! The students are observing their growth each week and learning about how they change.

• Social Studies: On Thursday, it was Earth Day. We learned our Earth Day poem this week, and we also talked about the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle. We talked about what each of these words mean, and how each one of us can help the environment. We made a book to write down different ways we will help the Earth.

• Assembly: This week, we watched the First Grade Musical in the MP room. They performed many songs and even had a few dance numbers to show us. They had cute costumes as well!

• Buddies: On Tuesday, our fourth grade buddies came to our classroom. We worked on a project where we had to write and draw 5 things we love, then we had to find 5 other things that our buddy also loves. We practice communicating, sharing, and working together with our big buddies.

• Music: We saw Ms. Disney on Thursday. We learned a new song about fishes in the ocean and we pretended to be little plants and fish using colorful scarves. Then we sang some of our old songs such as Old Mother Hubbard, Doggie Where is Your Bone? and Bow Wow Wow, our partner dancing song!

Today, I had to attend a workshop at the District because I am a mentor for beginning teachers. I hope the children had a great day. For those of you that can, I hope you are able to attend the International Festival this afternoon and evening. Thanks to all of you who have been helping out! One more sad announcement is that Catherine and her family are leaving our class and today was her last day with us! This was unexpected news for us. She will return next year in First Grade, but she will not be back for the rest of Kindergarten. Goodbye!!!

Dear Families,

We have finished 143 days of Kindergarten! Our last day of school on June 10th will be the 180th day of school. I can’t believe we are almost there! Don’t forget that last week a letter was sent home about yearbooks. If you would like to purchase one, they are $20 until May 1st, then the price goes up. Please turn in your payment to the office if you are interested in buying one.

I would like to congratulate Woojin for participating in the Science Fair two weeks ago. We accidentally missed his project and I apologize for leaving him out of last week’s newsletter as one of the other participants. Great job Woojin!

Here are some highlights for the week:
• Star of the Week: Yash
(On our website under “Curriculum” and “Star of the Week.”)

• Letter of the Week: A
(You can see our computer center drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.)

• Story of the Week: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick

• Language Arts: Our theme for the week was plants and flowers. For our journals, we wrote a sentence together telling the major parts of a plant. We learned how to use a comma to separate a list of items in a sentence. Our new sharing papers went home this week. The biggest area to work on is participation. Some students raise their hands often and others not at all. Some students listen quietly and others have a hard time keeping comments to themselves. Some students sit still and others move frequently. These are all areas included in participation – controlling our bodies, respecting our peers, and getting involved.

• Math: This week we practiced estimating. Students learned how to look at a big group of items, and be able to make a good guess such as 10, 20, or 30. We also practiced tricks to counting, such as finding rows of 5, and then skip counting by 5’s instead of one by one. We are learning to think about numbers in a different way than just 1, 2, 3. Also, students practiced answering questions about calendars, days, and months. We learned how to find out if there are 30 or 31 days in a month (by using our knuckles!). In addition, our center today was practicing how to make and show different math sentences using eggs and nests.

• Computer Lab: We did not have computer lab this week. On Wednesday during our usual lab time, we had a special 5th grade musical presentation instead. The 5th graders had been practicing a play with songs, instruments, and acting. It was really fun to watch, especially since we had several older siblings performing!

• Science: Since we were learning about plants and flowers, we talked about what makes something a living thing. We talked about what plants need to survive such as soil, air, water, and sun. We also learned the parts of a plant such as roots, a stem, leaves, and petals. After reading many books about plants and seeds, we learned that seeds travel in many different ways, such as by wind, birds, bees, squirrels, etc. We spent part of the week making a book for our poem, Plant a Little Seed.

• Assembly: Our assembly today was called Dance Through Time. We watched the performers doing different dance styles from each decade!

• Art: On Tuesday, we had our last art class for the year with Ms. Abada. This week’s lesson was learning to draw different types of lines, such as zig-zag, wavy, vertical, horizontal, or diagonal lines. We used oil pastels to draw the lines, and then we got to use watercolors to paint the different spaces on our paper.

I will be staying around here during vacation since my husband still has to work. We are getting our small side yard paved (it is full of weeds currently!), so I will be home to make sure everything goes ok. Also, I will be spending time with my family to celebrate my sister’s birthday. Of course, spring cleaning will be part of the week as well! I hope your families have a wonderful week of vacation! For those of you going somewhere, have safe travels and have a great time!

Dear Families,

Congratulations to Keona and Matthew N., who both participated in Eaton’s Science Fair this past Wednesday. Our class had a chance to walk through the Science Fair during the school day and see all of the projects! Keona did an experiment to see which color house would absorb the most and least heat from the sun. Her conclusion was that black absorbs the most heat and light colors absorb the least amount of heat. Matthew N. did an experiment to see what kind of liquid would help to grow a plant the best. He concluded that water is the best liquid for plants to grow. Great job!

Here are some highlights for the week:
• Star of the Week: Lauren
(On our website under “Curriculum” and “Star of the Week.”)

• Letter of the Week: X
(You can see our computer center drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.)

• Story of the Week: Looking for Easter

• Language Arts: On Wednesday, we had to go to the Science Fair, so we had shorter centers. Therefore, we only had to write about our favorite part in listening center this week. We have been learning about eggs and animals that hatch from eggs. One story we read was called An Egg is Quiet. In our journals on Monday, we had to draw and write about an animal that hatches from an egg. We learned that birds, reptiles, and amphibians are some types of animals that hatch from eggs.

• Sharing: I will be using the new sharing evaluation sheet starting next week. Hopefully this will help you to see a few more areas that your child can keep practicing on. I added fluency (good pace, not rushing or pausing), participation (listening, body still, asking questions), and visual (evaluates the picture, drawing, or object that is brought).

• Math: We have been practicing our numbers from 21-30 this week. We have been working on skip counting by 10’s and counting on from any number, such as 20, 21, 22… Also, we have been learning to estimate whether a number is more or less than another. We are using tricks such as identifying 10 when seeing a ten-frame, or identifying 5 when seeing only half of a ten-frame.

• Computer Lab: We illustrated our April poem of the month called, Earth Day. We drew these pictures in Kidpix and made a landscape of things from nature. Students learned that in drawings, objects that are closer are bigger and objects that are farther should be smaller. We also added different animals in the water and land. You can see our drawings in the “Classwork” section of our website.

• Science: In addition to learning about eggs, and animals that hatch from eggs, we have been learning about the water cycle. We learned a song to teach us the big words in the water cycle, and also made a project to show how water travels. We learned that the sun helps water evaporate into the air, and that makes clouds form, which is called condensation. After many drops are added to the cloud, then it rains or snows, which is called precipitation. Students just need to understand that our weather changes and so does water.

• Social Studies: We have been doing some projects to celebrate Easter, such as making a tempura paint egg, as well as a clay chick. We have also been reading many stories about bunnies, chicks, and baby animals. Thank you to Colleen’s family for bringing cookies and juice for the kids to enjoy in celebration of Easter!

• Assembly: Our assembly today was by the Traveling Lantern performers. They told different stories from Greek Mythology using acting and different props. They are always wonderful with our audience.

• Music: We saw Ms. Disney on Thursday and we started by singing our old song, “Oh Where, Oh Where, Can My Little Dog Be?” Students who had not had a turn playing the game to this song got a chance on that day. Afterwards, we learned a song about Old Mother Hubbard and her little dog. We acted out a story with Ms. Disney, pretending to be the doggies.

I apologize to my morning class for forgetting to send home the homework envelopes again on Monday! If you pick up your child, please remind me if you do not see his or her homework folder. Thank you!!! That will help me to remember.

Have a great weekend. Many children shared that they will be attending an Easter Egg Hunt at their preschool or church or at someone’s house. I hope you have a wonderful time with your families. I will be performing with my dance group, Eight Count, on Sunday for our Easter Service, so it will be a busy weekend for me! See you on Monday!
